About the electric conductivity converter
Electric conductivity (σ) is the reciprocal of resistivity and measures how readily a material carries current. The SI unit is siemens per meter (S/m). It is widely used in water-quality testing (μS/cm of dissolved ions), in metals processing, and in semiconductor doping. Pure water has very low conductivity (~5 μS/m); seawater is around 5 S/m; copper is 5.96 × 10⁷ S/m.
Frequently asked questions
-
How is conductivity related to resistivity?
σ = 1 / ρ. A material with resistivity 0.01 Ω·m has conductivity 100 S/m.
-
What is a typical conductivity for drinking water?
Most tap water is between 50 and 800 μS/cm. Ultra-pure deionized water can be as low as 0.055 μS/cm.
