About the frequency wavelength converter

For any electromagnetic wave traveling in a vacuum, frequency and wavelength are linked by the speed of light: λ = c / f, where c ≈ 299,792,458 m/s. That means once you know the frequency in hertz, the wavelength in meters (or nanometers) is fixed, and vice versa. This relation is fundamental in radio engineering, optics, and spectroscopy — Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz has a wavelength of about 12.5 cm, while green light at 550 nm corresponds to roughly 545 THz. Use this tool to flip between the two representations of the same wave.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the formula linking frequency and wavelength?

λ = c / f. Wavelength (in meters) equals the speed of light (≈3×10⁸ m/s) divided by frequency (in hertz).

  • What wavelength is visible light?

Roughly 380 nm (violet) to 750 nm (red), corresponding to frequencies of about 790 THz down to 400 THz.

  • Does this conversion work in materials other than vacuum?

Strictly, this calculator assumes vacuum. Inside a medium with refractive index n, the wavelength shrinks by a factor of n while the frequency stays the same, so multiply the result by 1/n for accurate values.
